Satellite Data:
GOES 8, 9, 10; METEOSAT: 1996 à
ATSR2: 1996 à
TMI: June 1998 à
Existing Products:
Navy (bulk): weekly, gridded 1o
Reynolds (bulk): weekly, gridded 1o
Pathfinder (bulk): weekly, pixel-level, 94-96
ASTR-ASST (skin): daily, half degree (since 1996)
TMI SST (1 mm): since June 98
Validation Data: CD with a lot of skin SST measurements available Spring 00 (Emery).
Desired: After 1996, after June 1998 (coincident with ASTR2, TMI)
Desired: Coincident with high quality flux data
Ancillary Comparison/Validation Activities:
Various dataset intercomparisons
Possible ONR-sponsored workshop
Desired Ancillary Parameters:
Precipitation
Surface Radiation Fluxes
Mixed Layer Data
Turbidity, Optical Clarity
Conclusions:
Operational SST products do not meet our requirements, and it is unlikely that they will be evolving in the directions that we would require.
A new SST dataset is needed for this project, with the following enhancements
- skin sst
- diurnal cycle
- values under cloudy conditions
New sensors (ASTR2, TMI) and new analysis techniques that use results from ocean mixed layer models (Emery/Wick; Clayson/Curry) can provide the foundations for this new SST dataset
Increased field observations of skin SST data globally is required to evaluate the new dataset
